What to Do If Your Car Breaks Down on the Road

September 3, 2019

A car breakdown can be stressful and even dangerous if you’re unprepared. Knowing the right steps to take can help keep you safe and
get help quickly. At Tow Truck QLD, we assist stranded drivers every day, and here’s exactly what you should do if your car
breaks down on the road.

1. Stay Calm and Assess the Situation

As soon as you notice a problem, remain calm. Safely reduce speed and look for a secure place to stop, such as the road shoulder, a car park, or an emergency bay.

2. Move Your Vehicle to a Safe Location

If possible, steer your vehicle off the road and away from traffic. Turn your wheels away from the road and engage the handbrake to prevent rolling.

3. Turn On Hazard Lights

Activate your hazard warning lights immediately to alert other drivers. This is especially important during night-time, rain, or heavy traffic.

4. Exit the Vehicle Safely

If it’s safe to do so, exit the vehicle from the side away from traffic and stand well clear of the road. On busy highways, it may be safer to stay inside with your seatbelt on.

5. Use a Warning Triangle or Roadside Marker

Place a reflective warning triangle at least 50–100 metres behind your vehicle to give approaching drivers enough notice.

6. Identify the Problem (If Safe)

Check for obvious issues such as a flat tyre or overheating, but avoid attempting repairs if you’re unsure or conditions are unsafe.

7. Call for Professional Assistance

If the problem cannot be fixed quickly, it’s best to call a professional towing service rather than risk further damage or danger.

8. Contact a Reliable Towing Service

Tow Truck QLD provides fast and dependable towing and roadside assistance 7 days a week across Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich and surrounding areas.

9. Stay Visible and Safe While Waiting

Remain in a safe position while waiting for help. Keep hazard lights on and avoid standing too close to moving traffic.

10. Follow the Tow Operator’s Instructions

Once help arrives, follow the tow operator’s safety instructions to ensure a smooth and secure recovery.
